Hey Tatts , your writing holds both the beauty and the hard truths without flinching. You’ve shown so clearly the struggle to learn and connect across deep cultural gaps. Your sharp eye and gentle strength shine through — we need more of this honest seeing. Keep going, your voice matters!
I am in inner city London but reading your Substack quickly transports me to the incredible community you write about. Your ability to observe acutely, pinpoint important and difficult things others have ceased to see, and at the same time remain open with a lightness which undoubtedly keeps you going, is amazing. These are the qualities we all need to cultivate. Keep at it!
Yes, there is "No easy Answers". Your words very much resonate with my experience when I worked almost four months in Tennant Creek at the local hospital as a nurse and midwife several years ago. I conducted a few medivacs to rural communities via plane, and again, this was at times extremely tragic to witness the raw experiences of Indigenous communities in the NT.
Your reflections on living in an Indigenous community were very moving to read. Your experiences shed important light on the complexities and realities faced by these communities. Keep writing; your perspective enriches our understanding and empathy.
You've captured the tension, beauty and complexity so well. And the challenges for the wajulla who wants learn but hasn't the language to navigate the cultural divides. Thanks for articulating it so well.
Beautiful words and thoughts Amanda. Remember I told you we would be travelling down the GCR at the end of July? What's the best way to contact you? Would love to be able to catch up somewhere xx
So beautifully written Amanda. What an inspiring wordsmith you are. But more to the point: I know (and love) the Outback, but have never visited a Community. Your words took me to the heart of one, introducing me to its challenges and its wonder. Thank you!!
Wow Amanda. What a life changing experience this is turning out to be. I wonder if you will be successful in persuading the kids not to chuck rocks at eachother! Also it’s fascinating to hear about the 1300 weather balloons released each day - what happens to them? Do they fall back to earth? If so that’s alot of plastic…!
